Hi all-
Over the weekend someone ran into my detached garage with their car. They essentially took out the corner of the garage and in turn hit and damaged my vehicle inside the garage. The police notified us of the incident when a neighbor noticed the damage and called. I filed a claim with my home owners insurance. Later, we heard that the police suspected a neighbor down the street as the person responsible after noticing damage to his vehicle in the driveway. I believe he was also ticketed.

Obviously a stressful situation, but to add to things, we are/were preparing to list our home in the next 4-5 weeks. We are building a home, and the timeline for listing is dictated by when the new home is due to be finished. We do have to close on this home to have sufficient funds to purchase the new home.

My homeowners insurance states they will call back next week about our next steps re: repairing the garage. I’m stressed that the repair timeline will push off the sale of our home and in turn interfere with our ability to close on the new home (turnkey build). Do folks think it is realistic that this type of repair could be completed in 1-2 months? Probably a tough question to answer. The garage door needs to be replaced, but also structural studs supporting the garage header likely need replacement along with siding, flashing, and trim. A friend also told me I should have filed the claim with the person’s insurance who hit the garage- is that accurate? I’m not completely sure if it was confirmed he was the person or not.

Thanks in advance, I’m in USA/Wisconsin.
