I just bought a car while home on Humanitarian TAD (mom dying of cancer) and I’ll be driving it back to Miramar in a few weeks to a couple months, and I need to get it insured. Only issue being I also just took my driving test and only just got my license, even though I’ve been driving on a permit since I was 16. USAA quoted me 450 for Texas, but I’m going to be in California so I’ve heard I need to get insurance out of Cali instead. What are my options for something cheaper? I can’t afford almost $500 a month in insurance.

I’ve been under my dad’s plan for his car with Allstate for 3 years if that helps anything

    1. Shop around. Only just now getting your license is going to make you extremely risky, and thus higher rates.

    2. You get insurance wherever you are right now, once you move you’ll have to update your policy to reflect your location.

You should always get insurance quotes for a potential new vehicle so you will know how much the car actually will cost you every month.

Forget USAA. They have some of the highest rates anywhere. Shop around for insurance. Also, don’t drive it until you are unsure. You shouldn’t have even been able to register it without insurance. You should be able to do what-if scenarios with your insurance, changing coverage, vehicle, and/ or location. You don’t need to change companies in most cases.

USAA has always been predatory towards junior enlisted IME, because they assume you’ll go there first because it’s military oriented, and being young and inexperienced you’ll think their price is the best because it’s “made for you”. For both myself and all my subordinates I’ve helped get licenses and insured, USAA has almost always been twice as expensive as regular insurance. Allstate as well. Of course the actual best rate is different for everybody, but Geico seems to be the best overall for most cases. Also try and get a quote with whoever you parents used, as that can sometimes get you huge discounts
