The opening of the Suez Canal in Egypt shortened distances and the travel time between Europe and Asia. Singapore was now strategically placed along this trade route. The British made Singapore the main coaling and refitting station in Southeast Asia, for the steamships that needed to refuel along the way to China. Singapore soon became the centre of commerce and information in South East Asia.
